Abstract:
Media use is one of the most important leisure time activities of adolescents. This includes classic mass media such as TV as well as new media such a YouTube, computer games and various online networking applications. This media use is often embedded in social contexts by the means of using the media together with other or referring to media content in interpersonal communication. Various theories of media use consider the social relevance to be important but empirical analysis often lack to take account of the complex network dynamics that are involved. The talk provides an overview of the empirical findings from two network panel studies among adolescents in Switzerland an Germany over the past decade. Furthermore, challenges and opportunities of using smart watches for data collection are discussed.
